In the meantime, here are some quick tips to help improve the safety of the home: - Proper lighting is KEY for getting around, make sure there are enough lights around the house and replace burnt out bulbs immediately.
- Keep furniture arrangements simple and remove all clutter.
- Do not use loose area rugs that can easily lift or wrinkle.
- Electrical cords should be in good condition and out of walking areas.
- Stairways should be completely clear and affixed with handrails.
- Smoke and Carbon Monoxide sensors should be installed and hard-wired with fresh batteries for back-up.
- Check window and door locks periodically for proper function.
- Keep flammable items such as newspapers away from furnaces or fireplaces.
